The WISE experience at Clark Atlanta University had honestly been very accomplishing. Throughout my freshman year I have learned writing skills that will stick with me during my whole matriculation. Skill I had not possessed before coming to college. Throughout the semester I became more familiar with different forms of technology. Drop.io, wordpress, PowerPoint’s, virtual life, and many other important technologies were available. Using wordpress allowed me to challenge myself to something I was uncomfortable with. It was not an essay task and was truly something you had to get use to. WordPress was used to submit papers, blogs, etc. Fumbling through the site trying to figure out how and where things went best was the most challenging part. Although using wordpress was a true task it made me feel like I could accomplish even what seemed the most difficult to me. Being able to use the site without a problem is now beneficial because I cannot only use it to submit papers but it can also be used as a webpage as well. WordPress also serves as another form of communication, much like a social network. The WISE program opened my eyes to this.
Every expectation I had for the WISE program has been achieved. Although there was a long and hard struggle to become comfortable with the amount and length of papers assigned, I can truly say every moment was worth it. I feel much more proficient as a writer. Not only has my writing skills been enhanced I am also able to comprehend and apply knowledge to challenging readings. I have been able to read things I would have never read on my own time. Having to do this has allowed me to understand things in a much more broad scope. The WISE program has benefited my college experience in the best way possible. I have no regrets in signing up for the program. There is several writing that brought the whole experience together. The prospectus, midterm, and history research paper is what allowed me to realize my improvements this semester. To compliment the papers I was also assigned blogs that were beneficial such as, Technology, Composition, and History, a blog discussing African Americans and the face of welfare, the changes in the black male today, etc. I was able to dig deeper under the surface of what the question was simply asking and put my mind in places where it never thought to go. Doing the blogs and papers also helped me to see the connection between history and English in a way I had never thought of. These two subjects go hand in hand and knowledge from both can be applied to each other. Writing more has allowed me to become a more proficient reader and thinker. Analyzing topics and situations have also become much easier. Accessing a five page paper is no longer a challenge to me. The only problem with a five page paper now is to actually sitting down and doing it. I went from not knowing what I had to say to make even one page to having endless ideas. This is one way that I have improved on my writing skills as well.
The prospectus allowed me to understand what the importance of slave narratives were. I never thought about an actual slave narrative until receiving this assignment. I was able to choose a particular slave, read their narrative, and approach there situation with a research question. This allowed me to put myself in their shoes for a while and try to understand why they did the things they did. I was also able to better understand why they made the decision they did. During this prospectus I learned that my particular slave, Annie L. Burton was not a typical slave. Before accessing this assignment I did not know such a lifestyle for slaves existed. I only pictured being a slave was working in the fields and receiving torturous treatment. Annie L. Burton was somewhat like a house slave. She did not receive beating and torture everyday like fellow workers. She was able to sleep inside the master’s home as well as work under conditions that were comfortable which allowed her to possess the skills she needed to use when freedom became an option for African Americans. Reading this particular narrative then allowed me to look at the aspect of slavery in a whole new way. This assignment contributed to me becoming a better thinker rather than just a writer. The blogs also bettered my thinking skills. Each blog discussed different situations such as, the changes in the African American male from the past to present, etc. This particular blog was written based off a presentation. Listening to the presentation allowed me to see someone’s view point and compare it with my own. This is where thinking became an essential aspect in the assignment.
In conclusion, I would say this program has opened my eyes to a different side of writing and its importance. I am very satisfied that I signed up for the program at the beginning of the year. I would recommend the WISE program to everyone who is interested in becoming a better writer and thinker because it truly improves the skills you already have. The things I been able to receive from this program will last with me throughout a lifetime. Skills such as writing and thinking are skills that are needed with any aspect in life. Therefore I feel as though I have gained something valuable that I can use in almost every aspect in any situation. I was able to use different forms of communication to understand how important and essential excellent writing skills come in hand. From emails to blogs it is important to be able to get your point across in common language that everyone is able to understand. Once again the WISE program has allowed me to look at the world of writing in a whole new aspect. If I had not experienced this I would not have become as proficient as I am today. I also was also intrigue to see how History and English coincided with one another. Each assignment given in each class was able to be related to one another. It was very apparent to see how CMS, MLA, etc was important in each of these subjects. I will forever look at the subjects of History and English as a unity. Without one subject the other seems impossible. I have excelled in a place that serves much significance. The WISE program should be announced just like the honors programs is. I feel as though the WISE program is not talked about and recognized like it should be. After being in the program I feel that I don’t have a choice but to be an advocated for the program.
